Here are the Chapter Two projects

August 29, 2006 · Leave a Comment

We’ve chosen the following projects for Chap. 2:

The Concept of Marketing – all of 2.1

Market Analysis – including Market Segmentation, Demographics, Psychographics, Geographics

Careers – including Product Management, with special reports on “What is a brand?” and “What is the process known as branding?”

The Teen Market – What is it? – Who is it? – Why is it such an important market?

Once again, these are super important concepts for understanding how we do business in the U.S. and the world. There are people out there trying to get inside your head, figure you out, and sell you stuff whether you want it or not. Find out how they do it!

And tell us all about it.

Read Chapter Two to get ready for your next project

August 29, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I’ll post your next project assignments soon, but first I’d like you to read Chap. 2 while thinking about this question: What are the likely topics Mr. Ross will use for the next project?

BTW, the first presentations showed that this class can focus on important learning and deliver the goods. Well done.

Enjoy Chap. 2. It’s got some really important stuff, well explained.

How to save docs in this class — for now, plus some hints on moving forward on the projects

August 22, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Right now, you’re going to want to take notes, probably in a Word doc, so you’ll also want to save them. What I’d like you to do is create a folder in My Documents called Marketing and then save your file with a name like this:

ksmith.functionsproject.notes

The first is your name, of course, second is your project and third is your purpose. The file type – .doc – will be automatically added to the name after you save it. You probably won’t even see that because the computer is programmed to not show “known file types.” Okay?

Also, think about what you need to present your topic well, and you’ll be wanting to build a PowerPoint presentation. So talk amongst yourselves and give each other roles or jobs that will get everything organized. You might want to choose a leader, a writer, a presenter, a researcher – or even rotate jobs – so you can get everything done, with everyone participating.

First Projects of the Year

August 22, 2006 · Leave a Comment

As you’ll find out, I like students to be in charge of their own learning. We do this by sharing the workload in projects. This is not a difficult thing because we can share the load. Teachers call this jigsawing: We divide up parts of the puzzle and spread the work around, and soon the puzzle is solved, and we didn’t have to do it all ourselves.

We’ll do that starting with Chapter 1 in our well-organized and thorough Marketing Essentials textbook. We’ll read Chap. 1 in class and instead of traditional homework, we’ll break up into four teams to take in-depth looks at very key elements in the world of Marketing. I mean this chapter is thick!

Here’s the plan:

Team 1: The foundations of Marketing

Team 2: The functions of Marketing

Team 3: The utilities of Marketing

Team 4: Careers in Marketing

We’ll read on Tuesday, organize in teams on Wednesday and get started, complete reports on Thursday – I like PowerPoint, but you can decide – and present on Friday.

I facilitate along the way. Let’s get this show started! Oh, and ask me questions. That’s what I’m here for.

Welcome to the Marketing Class

August 21, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I’m very happy to meet all of you. I know we’re going to have a good year, and I’m sure at the end of it you’ll be pleased with all you’ve learned about a subject that is full of real-world knowledge you can really use.

Our first order of business is to discuss and sign our Contract. This Contract is in use in every course offered by our ROP Department, which we have renamed Vintage Occupational Academy. We are a unified small school-within-a-school.

We believe in self-respect and self-responsibility, and that’s what our VOA Contract is all about.
